Last Friday, a pedestrian was struck and killed on I-55 in Hinds County. According to WJTV News Channel 12, the incident happened at about 10:00 p.m. on I-55 South at County Line Road. The male pedestrian, whose identity hasn't yet been released, was between the ages of 40 and 50 years old. All southbound lanes had to be closed while first responders, crews and investigative officials worked the scene.

Pedestrian Safety in Jackson
Sadly, pedestrians were one of the few road-user groups to experience an increase in fatalities in 2011. Pedestrian safety needs to be a top priority in Jackson and across the country. Drivers need to put down the phones, and pay attention to the road.

Pedestrian Fatalities and Injuries in America

• In 2011, 4,432 pedestrians were killed in car crashes in the U.S.
• In 2010, 4,280 pedestrians were killed in motor vehicle wrecks across the country.
• 70,000 pedestrians were injured in car crashes in 2010.
• On average, one crash-related pedestrian death happened every two hours.
• Additionally, a pedestrian was injured every eight minutes.

Serious Bodily Injuries

Pedestrians don't have the same safety protections as motor vehicle occupants. They aren't encased in a steel cage. They don't have seatbelts and air bags. They are truly at the mercy of other roadway users. It's not uncommon for car accidents involving pedestrians to leave victims seriously injured or dead. Even a seemingly mild collision at relatively low speeds can be deadly for a pedestrian. Brain and spinal cord injuries are especially concerning for vulnerable pedestrians. Pedestrians don't wear helmets like cyclists, so it doesn't take much for a head injury to become debilitating or fatal.

After a Pedestrian Accident

If you or a pedestrian you love has been struck by a car, get your immediate medical needs addressed first. Whether you're transported from the scene to the hospital or visit a doctor after the collision, make sure your health comes first. When drivers are texting behind the wheel or engaging in other dangerous driving behaviors, they put everybody on the road at great risk, including pedestrians. Let an experienced serious bodily injury attorney or wrongful death lawyer handle your case. The team at Coxwell & Associates, PLLC sends their deepest condolences to the family members and friends of the victim.
