Top 5 Most Dangerous Roads in Mississippi

A 2010 Reader's Digest article revealed the worst, deadliest and the best roads in America. All fifty states were ranked, according to safest roads, most dangerous roads, most scenic roads and most "sensible" roads. In this particular article the top ten states for deadly speeding and DUIs were also listed. The state of Mississippi ranked number six among the top ten states with the deadliest roads. Mississippi also ranked 6th for the deadliest roads for impaired drivers, and 2nd for roads driven at excessive speeds.

Deadly Roads for Pedestrians
When talking about dangerous roads, pedestrians and bicyclists must also be factored into the equation. Between the years 2003 and 2012, 527 pedestrians were killed in Mississippi. Generally speaking, arterial roads which move auto traffic quickly with minimal delays have become the main streets of communities, typically being surrounded by office complexes, shopping centers and apartments. In Mississippi, 18.1 percent of all pedestrian deaths occurred on arterial roads.

Which Roads are Mississippi's Most Dangerous?
In an article titled America's 100 Deadliest Highways, Mississippi had three of the most deadly roads:

  • I-20 - Coming in at number 55, I-20 in Mississippi had 0.66 fatalities per mile.
  • I-55 - At number 63, Mississippi's I-55 made the list, with 0.61 fatalities per mile.
  • I-59 - At number 73, I-59 made the top 100, with 0.55 fatalities per mile.

School Bus Crash in Hinds County


On Thursday morning, a Hinds County School District school bus was involved in a crash. According to WJTV News Channel 12, the two-vehicle wreck happened on Dulaney Road in Hinds County. Although very few details have been released, everybody was reportedly okay after the wreck. For currently unknown reasons, a vehicle rear-ended the bus on Dulaney Road. At this time, there is no word on the investigative developments in this case involving a Durham School Services bus. Thankfully, no injuries were initially reported.

Deadly Head-on Collision Involving School Bus

On Thursday, a deadly head-on collision involving a school bus happened in Rankin County. Very little information has been released on how this crash happened, but according to WJTV News Channel 12, the incident occurred on Star Road near New Jerusalem Church Road. For currently unknown reasons, a school bus and another automobile collided head on. At least one fatality has been confirmed in connection with the crash. Additionally, the bus driver also suffered from injuries.

Hinds County School Bus Crash

At least three children were injured in a Hinds County school bus crash earlier this week. According to WJTV News Channel 12, the incident happened in Learned, Mississippi on Adams Station Road near Bush Road. For currently unknown reasons, the bus crashed when it was taking students to Carver Middle School and Raymond High School. Very few details have been released about the crash. At this time, we still don't know what caused the crash or if there were other vehicles involved.

Mississippi State University Bus Crash

On Saturday night, there was a crash involving a Mississippi State University (MSU). According to WJTV News Channel 12, the incident occurred sometime around 7:30 p.m., about five miles from the Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. For currently unknown reasons, the bus was involved in a crash with at least one other vehicle.

National School Bus Safety Week

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is currently observing National School Bus Safety Week. According to WJTV News Channel 12, officials with the MDOT are encouraging motorists and parents to take part by practicing safe school bus precautions and talking to children about school bus safety this week. School buses are actually the safest way to get children to and from school each day. They're large, highly visible vehicles that are designed to keep kids safe in the event of a crash. Actually, the most dangerous part of riding a school bus is boarding and exiting the vehicle.
