The Deadliest Days of the Year for Car Drivers

The National Safety Council estimates that in 2015, more than 38,000 people were killed in car accidents across the United States. This was the deadliest year on American roads since 2007. While a car accident can occur at any time and on any day of the year, there are certain days that are deadlier than others for car drivers. These days see an increase in car accidents, largely because of drunk or intoxicated drivers mingling with increased traffic or young drivers. Some months are also deadlier than others – due to increased vacation traffic. So, what are the deadliest days of the year?

Pedestrian Injured by Semi Truck

Over the weekend, a pedestrian was struck and seriously injured by a semi truck in Jackson. According to WJTV News Channel 12, the incident happened sometime around 3:00 p.m., near the intersection of Gallatin and West Streets. At this time, very few details have been released, but we do know that the victim was unresponsive on the scene. He was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for treatment of severe injuries.

Lincoln County Pedestrian Injured

On Wednesday night, a pedestrian was struck and injured in Lincoln County. According to WJTV News Channel 12, the incident happened on Highway 51 near Argyel Trail. For currently unknown reasons, a Nissan Maxima struck 37-year-old Amber Ard. She was swiftly transported to UMC for treatment of serious injuries. The driver of the Maxima did not report any injuries, and there are very few details on how this collision could have happened.

Fatal Pedestrian Crash on Highway 78

Early Saturday morning, a pedestrian was struck and killed in Union County. According to WJTV News Channel 12, the incident happened on Highway 78, near mile marker 57. For currently unknown reasons, the unidentified pedestrian was struck while walking in the westbound lane of the highway. Sadly, the victim died on the scene.

Child Pedestrian Struck by Car in Jackson

On Tuesday afternoon, a child pedestrian was struck by a car in Jackson. According to WJTV News Channel 12, the incident happened at about 4:00 p.m. on Monaco Street. For currently unknown reasons, the child was hit by a car. Very few details have been released, but the child was taken to a hospital in somebody's personal automobile. The child's injuries were initially described as minor, but there's no word on his or her current condition or the extent of injuries involved in the collision.

Jackson Pedestrian Fatally Struck in Biloxi

A 26-year-old Jackson man was struck and killed by a drunk driver in Biloxi over the weekend. According to WJTV News Channel 12, the vehicle involved was a van stolen from the University of Southern Mississippi's Gulf Coast Research Lab.

Very few details have been released about this terrible incident, but 36-year-old David Lee Shepperd of Colorado is being held on a $1,000,000 bond. WJTV News Channel 12 reports that he has been charged with DUI causing death and taking away of a motor vehicle.

Pedestrian Struck and killed on I-55

Last Friday, a pedestrian was struck and killed on I-55 in Hinds County. According to WJTV News Channel 12, the incident happened at about 10:00 p.m. on I-55 South at County Line Road. The male pedestrian, whose identity hasn't yet been released, was between the ages of 40 and 50 years old. Officer Colendula Green, with the Jackson Police Department, said that the pedestrian was struck by several cars. He was pronounced dead on the scene. All southbound lanes had to be closed while first responders, crews and investigative officials worked the scene.
