Bayer claims that Essure is a safe permanent form of birth control. It is a metal device that is placed into the fallopian tubes to prevent future pregnancies and hundreds of women in the US have chosen to use Essure. However, despite Bayer's claims that Essure is safe and the side effects or risks are minimal, there have been cases where women have suffered serious side effects.
In some cases, the metal coils have perforated organs and caused agonizing internal damage. Due to the design and purpose of the device, some doctors have struggled to remove the coils and some women have had to have a complete hysterectomy.
There are many cases of women suffering with difficult and painful injuries because of Essure. So, the question many people are asking is, 'Why has there been no Essure recall?'
Has there been an Essure recall?
Despite the injuries and serious side effects hundreds of women have suffered from Essure, Bayer has not issued an Essure recall.
The FDA has held meetings with the Obstetrics and Gynecology Devices Panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Committee to hear safety opinions about Essure but there has been no move made to recall it.
When a medical device is considered defective or harmful, many manufacturers and companies decide to recall their products to ensure no further harm can be caused to patients. Bayer has made the decision not to recall Essure but to continue promoting it as a safe and pain-free form of permanent birth control.
Will there be an Essure recall in the future?
From an outside point of view, it is unacceptable that Bayer has not recalled Essure and there seems to be no suggestion that they will recall it in future. Some of the women suffering from Essure have filed lawsuits and formed groups to spread awareness about the dangers of using Essure.
The FDA has had more meetings to discuss what should be done about Essure and they have decided Bayer must include a black box warning to alert people of the potential dangers when choosing Essure. The FDA have also said Bayer must carry out more studies to determine the safety of the device.
While the FDA are keeping a close eye on Essure, there is still more to be done.
On the part of Bayer, they have decided to protect their own profits by continuing to market Essure to women. There have been cases where women have felt pressured into having the device because their doctors have pushed them to make the decision. While one of the benefits of Essure is supposed to be the fact a doctor can insert the device without having to go to hospital to undergo the procedure, some doctors are not sufficiently trained to insert the device.
There are many problems associated with Essure and it's unacceptable that there are many women who have suffered complications which could have been avoided if Bayer decided to issue a recall.
