Some semi trucks in Mississippi will soon be outfitted with “black box” devices, similar to those used in airplanes. According to WAPT News Channel 16, the data collected could help investigators and commercial trucking company owners determine what’s going on behind the wheel prior to an accident. The data will show whether or not a brake or clutch was applied at a certain time or in some vehicles, whether or not steering was used prior to the crash. This data could give investigators clues as to what happened during the moments leading up to a potentially injury-causing or fatal semi truck accident.
1,400 Semi Truck Crashes in Mississippi
In 2014, there were almost 1,400 wrecks involving commercial trucking vehicles across the State of Mississippi. At this time, investigators are learning how to analyze the data so that they will be able to determine what’s going on behind the wheel in the event of a review. This black box could help to hold negligent, careless and dangerous big-rig drivers accountable for their actions.
Accidents Involving Commercial Trucks
Semi truck crashes can be devastating for victims in smaller vehicles, like cars and light trucks. Even a seemingly minor accident involving a semi truck can leave victims in the hospital, or worse. Additionally, accidents involving semi trucks often require additional investigative efforts. Commercial truck drivers and trucking companies have to follow federal rules and regulations for safe operation on U.S. roadways. Since these trucks are so much larger and heaver than traditional passenger occupant vehicles, drivers have to follow all federal regulations to ensure safety of other drivers and passenger occupants on the roadways.
When to Call a Truck Accident Lawyer
After any accident involving a big rig, it’s a good idea to speak with a personal injury attorney. There could be multiple investigative agencies involved, including the federal government. Your attorney can stay on top of developments in federal, state and local investigations.
