Fatal Crash on I-20

Early Thursday morning, there was a fatal crash on I-20. According to WJTV News Channel 12, the incident happened near the Bolton exit. At this time, very few details have been released about the wreck, but we do know that 68-year-old Richard Atkinson died in the crash. Apparently a white GMC Envoy was headed eastbound when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The automobile then ran off the roadway. Running onto the median, the driver overcorrected the vehicle and it overturned.

Fatal Crash Still Under Investigation

Atkinson was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and he was ejected from the vehicle. We don’t know if any other people were involved in the crash or why the driver of the car initially lost control of the vehicle. At this time, the crash is still under investigation with the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Click It or Ticket

Tragically, this wreck has happened right in the middle of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA’s) “Click It or Ticket” campaign. In addition to increased enforcement across the nation, the NHTSA is hoping to raise awareness about the dangers associated with failing to buckle up. The Memorial Day weekend holiday is particularly well known for an increase in injury-causing and fatal accidents, so motorists are encouraged to buckle up and drive safe.

U.S. Seat Belt Usage Facts

• The current national seat belt use rate is at 87 percent.
• That means there are still about 27.5 million people who aren’t buckling up.
• In 2012, seat belts save an estimated 12,174 people across the country.
• Between 2008 and 2012, seat belts saves an estimated 63,000 lives.

Seat Belt Safety in Jackson
Seat belt safety awareness needs to be a top priority in Jackson and across the state. Raising awareness about the dangers associated with not buckling up is essential for increasing seat belt usage. There are still about 27.5 million lives at risk across the nation. You can’t help what other drivers are doing, but you can buckle up.

The team at Coxwell & Associates, PLLC sends their deepest condolences to the family members and friends or Richard Atkinson and wishes everybody safe travels during Memorial Day weekend.
