Icy Roads in Metro Area

Commuters in the Metro area and across Mississippi have been dealing with Icy roads and bridges this week. WJTV News Channel 12 reports that first responders and other emergency response crews were out in full force on Friday morning. There were several crashes in the Metro alone. Interstate 20, near exit 56, was clogged up for hours after a collision. All lanes had to be shutdown as crews responded to the scene.

Multiple Crashes in Jackson

Another crash on I-55, near the Pearl Street exit, also had traffic backed up. Interstate 220, north of Medgar Evers Boulevard and Industrial Drive, was also the scene of a crash. Very few details were released about these wrecks, so we don’t know if anybody hurt in these crashes or how many vehicles were involved.

Driving Too Fast For Conditions
Driving too fast for conditions is a common occurrence in poor weather. Whether it’s freezing rain, a little bit of snow or a springtime downpour, drivers need to adjust their driving speeds in accordance with the weather. It’s not safe to go even the posted speed limit in certain weather conditions. Driving too fast for weather conditions can put everybody on the road at great risk. Making sure your car is cold weather road-ready is also important for safe driving this season. Finally, drivers should exercise additional caution when approaching and driving over bridges and overpasses in colder weather.

Bridges Ice First
Drivers should also remember that bridges and overpasses are the first parts of the road to freeze in cold weather. They don’t have the benefit of the ground keeping them warm. They’re exposed to elements from above and below. Drivers are urged to exercise additional caution when traveling over bridges and overpasses in cold weather.
