At least two people were arrested in connection with a Hinds County drug bust. According to WJTV News Channel 12, the drug bust went down last Tuesday evening in an alley on North State Street. Apparently, more than $30,000 worth of drugs were seized during the bust. There was reportedly cocaine, methamphetamines and marijuana. Although very few details have been released about the bust, the suspects are facing possession and intent to distribute charges. This was a joint-task force bust by the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office and the Jackson Police Narcotic Department.
Possession and Intent to Distribute
Felony drug charges are nothing to take lightly. Under the best of circumstances, they can leave a lasting impact on your life. Getting in touch with a proven criminal defense attorney needs to be your first priority after an arrest. Don’t count on the public defender either. He or she does not have the time or resources to dedicate to your freedom. With the War on Drugs and Mandatory Minimum laws, even relatively small quantities of certain drugs can get you thrown into prison for years or decades.
Mandatory minimum laws take the judge’s discretion out of the equation. These laws are designed to lock people up, regardless of circumstances or prior records. Even first time offenders can get stiff sentences. It doesn’t matter if the crime was non-violent either. If drugs are involved, you could be facing serious penalties. If you used a gun during the crime, you could also be facing an additional five years.
